Health & Social Care
This is a highly motivated, well-resourced and successful department. The department offers the (2022) BTEC TECH Award in Health and Social Care at Key Stage 4 and the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care (Health Studies) at KS5.
We cater effectively for pupils of all abilities and offer a range of teaching and learning experiences. The department prides itself on going the extra mile for all pupils to ensure they reach their potential in the subject many often exceeding the target grades both at KS4 & KS5.
Through a dedicated, passionate team of staff the department aims to provide students with a range of opportunities to help prepare them for further study and the world of work. Students in both key stages can look forward to a whole host of guest speakers all current practitioners working in health, social care fire and rescue services, probation, mental health services to name but a few.
At key stage 4 learners will complete 3 components of work across the two years of study. The 3 units are made up of 2 units that are coursework based and will be assessed internal and moderated externally, the third unit will be an examination that will be externally assessed by the exam board.
Students at KS5 will have opportunities to sign up to volunteering posts at Whiston and Aintree Hospital and are also expected to take part in 100 hours work experiences in a range of organisations across health social care and other public sectors. In addition to this students can look forward to university visits locally and across the North West, taking part in taster days and subject specific workshops. Students will work towards the completion of 13 units of work, 4 of which are external examinations and 9 units of coursework units assessed internally and moderated externally. Pupil voice is used to determine the optional units taught, and student degree choices and career pathways are taken into account. Previous students have progressed onto degree courses in Child and Adult Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Primary School teaching and Social Care.
