Dance

Dance lessons are taught in a specialised Dance and Drama studio which can be opened to create a larger rehearsal space. Dance is taught within the PE curriculum at KS3 and has a focus on how to create choreography. In Year 7, students are taught the basics of creating and using choreographic tools. In Year 8, students will learn a range of dance styles and in Year 9, students will work with different stimuli to create performance.

Dance at KS4 is offered to students through the Level 1/2 BTEC Tech Award in Performing Arts (Dance) course. In Year 10, alongside their practical explorations, students will study 3 contrasting performances to help increase critical appreciation and further develop knowledge of the approaches and processes used to create a dance production. This then feeds into their Component One assessment where students will analyse one of the three productions in further detail. In Component Two, students are required to accurately replicate a piece of professional repertoire which helps to develop movement memory, skills and technique. Students will take part in a range of workshops to increase physical and interpretive skills to enhance their performance. During the third and final component, students will devise their own choreography from a stimulus set by the exam board. The performance will last 7-15 minutes and allows students to showcase the skills they have gained across the full two year course.

The discipline, confidence and creativity levels that students develop through the BTEC Dance course will equip them for a range of different job roles and careers. Students will have the opportunity to perform in front of live audiences as well as extra curricular opportunities such as theatre trips, clubs and various performances.
