The Health & Social Care Department

Health and social care is a very popular choice of subject at Key Stage 4 and 5. We offer qualifications at GCSE (Double award) in year 10and 11, GNVQ in year 12, AS and A2 in years 12 and 13.

  • GCSE is divided into 3 units, 1 of which is an external exam with 2 portfolios
  • GNVQ consists of 6 units over 1 year
  • GCE consists of 3 units at ‘AS’ in year 12 and a further 3, ‘A2’in year 13.
From September 2007 we have been offering a B.Tec certificate to year 10 pupils. Further course details can be viewed at the Edexcel website.

Several of the pupils are able to take part in work experience placements which are Health related with previous year groups working at Aintree Hospital Trust, local school and private nurseries and a local care home for the elderly. Pupils studying at ‘A’ level are encouraged to take part in voluntary work to assist their choice of course at University.

Pupils following Health and Social care investigate, analyse and evaluate a wide range of topics including:
  • Local health and social services for the population of Kirkby and its service users.
  • The rights and responsibilities of clients using health, social care and charitable organisations
  • Factors affecting Health and Well-Being
  • Personal development and relationships
  • Self-concept; self-esteem and factors that affect it.
  • The virtual baby programme, with the assistance of Knowsley’s Healthy Schools scheme.
