The Business Department
Business
The Department is concerned that all students have the opportunity to achieve to the best of their ability. At Post 16 level courses on offer cater for a wide range of ability for students working at Level 2 and Level 3. The BTEC First, NVQ and BTEC National Award cater for students who wish to follow a vocational route. The 'A' levels allow students to continue to study other subjects at Advanced level. All courses incorporate aspects of Business theory together with elements of the social, environmental and political considerations influencing business behaviour.

Industrial liaison is an important part of the development of courses that are both interesting and relevant for students in the Department. Relationships are to be built up with a number of local employers and visits will occur to businesses locally and abroad.

The Department also runs the Career Academy. The UK Career Academy Foundation is a registered charity that leads and supports a national movement of employers, schools and colleges, working to raise the aspirations of 16-19 year olds who are considering a career in business. 72 schools, 1100 students, in the UK are involved in the programme.

The Career Academy programme lasts for 2 years and is for year 12 A level students who study Business and Finance. We currently have 10 students enrolled. The programme involves:
  • Partners in business - to mentor students
  • Visits and seminars - to offer a different learning environment
  • Guru lecturers
  • A 6 week paid internship in July / August 2008 - not your usual idea of work experience, a paid job with a valuable and motivated young person actually employed for 6 weeks.
Current sponsors of our programme include Alliance and Leicester, Citigroup, KPMG, IBM, FSA, Norwich Union, Morgan Stanley and many more.

The Department is well resourced with a wide variety of textbooks, resource packs and in-house materials available for use in the classroom. There is excellent access to Information Technology, which is used extensively, particularly as part of the BTEC programme.

As a Post-14 Curriculum Department we are committed to improving the quality of learning for the whole school. The students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and a wide range of teaching strategies are employed by staff. We are keen to provide a relevant and meaningful learning experience for all students taught in the subject areas. We will continue to strive to achieve good examination results at all levels.
