The Physical Education Department ![]() At Key Stage 3, we set about building upon the foundation of the previous Key Stage 2, and further develop our pupils’ skills relating to the six areas of prescribed study: dance, health & fitness activities, swimming, athletics, racket and ball games, and invasion games (the last being compulsory for all). Pupils' knowledge base is considerably extended, new skills are acquired, and insight is gained into sporting tactics and decision-making. We have now enhanced the curriculum on offer further by encouraging pupils’ to develop leadership and organisational skills. What we our seeing is an improvement in pupils’ communication skills and fair play. At Key Stage 4, students continue with what we call Core PE. This is compulsory and pupils’ participate in a 90 minute lesson once a week. These lessons concentrate less on the skill development focused upon in the previous Key Stage. The emphasis here is to promote exercise and healthy living. Pupils’ will follow a diverse curriculum, which includes activities like step aerobics, boxercise, and water aerobics, alongside the more traditional activities like invasion games. Pupils’ skills are further developed and refined, and the mental and character-building aspects of physical education are more prominent. Pupils’ are also introduced to the sophisticated and rewarding arts of officiating and coaching, and many pupils’ access the Junior Sports Leaders Award. At All saints we offer both GCSE and BTEC PE qualifications. We have an outstanding success rate. In 2008 we had 100% pass rate, with 72% of pupils’ achieving grades A-C. This is far above the National average, and we put this success down to the innovative teaching approaches staff offer, and interactive resources used in theory and practical lessons. Staff in the department have the highest expectations of pupils’ to succeed and the careful monitoring and assessment of pupils’ progress ensures every pupil has the opportunity to achieve the best possible result. In the sixth form, BTEC Sport and NVQ Sports Coaching qualifications are offered. Students learn about the Principles of coaching, social issues to do with sports, health and fitness testing, and physiology and anatomy. The NVQ qualification gives students the opportunity to work within the department and with local feeder primary pupils. The students will assist with the organisation and delivery of physical education lessons. All 6th Form sport students can access the Community Sports Leaders Award, and the Level 1 FA Football Coaching Certificate. The students leave the 6th Form with qualifications that can lead to employment or onto University. The successes of All Saints in sporting competitions have been, over recent years, many and great. It is almost unknown for All Saints football and basketball teams not to figure in local and regional finals. All Saints recently became the only Knowsley School ever to reach an English Schools Football National Cup Final. The dedication and expertise of staff ensures that we have highly skilled and ambitious teams at all age levels in football, basketball, netball, and athletics, and we are now building up our tennis, rounders, and cross-country teams to the same standard. We welcome every pupil to attend the wide variety of extra-curricular activities on offer at All Saints. We believe our success in competitions is based upon the coaching and training pupils’ receive when they attend after school clubs. We encourage pupils’ to see these clubs as an opportunity to meet friends, build social skills and develop their fitness levels. These clubs are for all pupils’, not just the pupils’ who represent the school in competitions. | Skip Calendar CalendarUpcoming EventsGoogle SearchBBC Education News |
