The Modern Foreign Languages Department ![]() Languages are part of the cultural richness of our society and the world in which we live and work. Learning languages contributes to mutual understanding, a sense of global citizenship and personal fulfilment. Pupils learn to appreciate different countries, cultures, communities and people. By making comparisons, they gain insight into their own culture and society. The ability to understand and communicate in another language is a lifelong skill for education, employment and leisure in this country and throughout the world. Learning languages gives pupils opportunities to develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and to express themselves with increasing confidence, independence and creativity. They explore the similarities and differences between other languages and English and learn how language can be manipulated and applied in different ways. The development of communication skills, together with understanding of the structure of language, lay the foundations for future study of other languages and support the development of literacy skills in a pupil’s own language. Languages at All Saints All Saints Catholic Centre for Learning offers two modern languages – French and Spanish. These are taught alternatively to year 7 groups entering the school . At the end of year 9, pupils may choose to continue with the language they have been learning or even take up the other language to study for GCSE. In years 10 & 11 numbers vary according to pupil option choices, but we try to keep classes as small as possible in order to maximise learning potential. A GCSE in a foreign language is highly regarded and is extremely desirable for pupils moving on to higher education. The department has strong links with our local feeder primary schools and several members of staff teach lessons to junior classes. Extra-curricular activities. All staff offer extra-curricular support lessons to pupils preparing for exams. We place great emphasis on speaking and listening skills as these are often the areas pupils find most challenging. Staff and pupils collaborate and organise this amongst themselves. A number of year 10 pupils who passed GCSE French in year 9 are currently studying for an AS level qualification. At present there is a languages club for year 8 pupils during enrichment time on a Thursday afternoon. This year they have had the chance to learn some Chinese, Italian and German. A group of pupils from the club will be visiting France in June. We hope to be able to extend the club for other year groups from September. Year 9 pupils studying Spanish have had the opportunity to attend a Spanish skills day at Anfield stadium. This was enjoyed by all – even the Evertonians! | Skip Calendar CalendarUpcoming EventsGoogle SearchBBC Education News |
