Learning Mentors

It has always been the policy of our school to care for our pupils’ individual needs in every way possible. As a continuation of our pastoral care system we now offer our pupils even more in-depth support with their personal and social development.

Our school Mentors see pupils from Years 7-11 on a fortnightly basis providing support and encouragement as they work towards their academic goals in school. Mentors are actively involved in helping pupils to organise their work, plan homework and revision, whilst encouraging excellence in attendance and punctuality. Where appropriate, organising and planning coursework and exam preparation will be highlighted. Mentors listen, support and encourage, and will help pupils to set realistic targets for their future and when necessary will meet with parent/carers and families and liaise with external agencies, which might also be able to offer our pupils the real care, which we believe, they deserve.

Mentors understand that some pupil’s barriers to learning can be of an emotional or behavioural nature. Therefore in all years, sessions will include emotional literacy work to support children in their individual developmental needs. This child centred approach is based on the work of Daniel Goldman and the Mentors encourage the process to be used by teaching staff as a basis on which the learner will feel safe to learn. As this process develops within the classroom the Learning Mentors highlight the issues of Learning Styles and all mentees together with their Mentors work to establish their own style (VAK). This way of working recognises the fact that children learn in different ways and need to feel safe to experiment with channels of information gathering with which they can access the National Curriculum.

Learning Mentors also provide a Personalised Learning Programme for Year 10 and Year 11 pupils who might be in need of extra support in order to achieve their true potential in English, Maths and I.T. Pupils work individually with Mentors and receive academic time lines and revision books, together with constant monitoring – on a daily basis if necessary. The pupils also participate in a Learning Performance Day, which involves motivation and exam preparation. All parents sign contracts to agree that their children will fully participate in the programme and are contacted on a fortnightly basis to ensure that they have the most up to date information to give the most realistic and effective support possible to their children at home.

All Saints has Peer Mentors who are now trained in all years from Year 8 upwards within school. Learning Mentors train Year 8 pupils every year for three days to work with Year 7 pupils and our Primary 6 pupils who join All Saints in September. The Peer Mentors also assist in Induction Days with our Primary Liaison Officer, participate in the Primary Transition Programme initiated by the Learning Mentors and are actively involved when training staff to teach through Emotional Literacy and Circle Time.

Circle Time is used by Learning Mentors as a way of working with pupils, which promotes self-discipline, team building, more effective learning, and an ability to manage emotions. It provides a way of involving the school community ensuring that they feel involved, listened to and motivated. Circle Time is used as the basis for all parts of the Peer Mentor training and is also used with Year 10 and 11 pupils as part of the Personalised Learning Programme. Learning Mentors also use this medium to train teaching and non-teaching staff. In addition to working with pupils through Circle Time for pastoral reasons it is also now becoming clear that pupils who are more aware of their emotions progress to achieve their academic potential.

Learning Mentors also initiate and organise Anti-Bullying and Domestic Violence Awareness Weeks in school. Parents, pupils and adults all receive relevant information during these weeks and assemblies and Citizenship lessons all focus on these themes. In addition each building has poster displays to advertise the theme and the programme for the week and Learning Mentors offer a Drop-In Centre to enable pupils to access support confidentially.
